You’ve heard of it and even seen it being used on others — Botox injections are all the rage among the swish set. It is the first refuge of those wishing to hold on to their youth and preserve an unlined complexion. But you don’t have to be a celebrity to get Botox treatment. Read on to know what the procedure is about and how it can benefit you.

What is Botox?

Botulinum Toxin, or Botox for short, is a chemical. It is actually a toxic protein that has adverse impacts on the nerves and tissues. It is produced by the Clostridium Botulinum class of bacteria. When introduced in life forms, it blocks the function of the acetylcholine neurotransmitter by not allowing it to reach the axon endings at key neuromuscular junctions. This causes flaccidity, or temporary paralysis. When present in large amounts, the toxic protein causes Botulism.

But this very property of causing temporary paralysis has been used in modern science to effect solutions for a range of human disorders and illnesses. However, Botox is most popularly used in cosmetic treatments to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Is it for you?

If you are unhappy about fine lines and wrinkles snaking about your face, then it may be time to take a Botox shot. The good news is that there are several reputed doctors and skin care clinics administering state-of-the-art Botox treatments in Dubai.

How is Botox used?

Botox is injected in trace amounts into the nerves or muscles, depending on the issue at hand. A microneedle is used to inject the chemical, after which it is allowed to rest in the area. Botox soon begins to ‘relax’ the nerves and/or tissue, to cause flaccidity. These cannot move till the effects of the protein wear off completely.

Botox treatments are used in a range of conditions, such as:

  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Chronic migraines
  • Neck spasms and involuntary eyelid twitches
  • Lazy eye
  • Excessive sweating or hyperhidrosis
  • Overactive bladder
  • Muscle contractions brought on by conditions like Cerebral Palsy

How Botox can help you keep time at bay

Time can be cruel in the way it leaves an imprint on your skin and hair. Its first signs are fine lines on the skin, which normally begin around the eyes and around the mouth. Soon, the fine lines develop into deep ridges or wrinkles. Wrinkles are irreversible — and in just a few years, you attain the visage of a much older person.

  • But though wrinkles cannot be eliminated entirely — unless you undergo an invasive face lift to pull the loose skin taut — you can do your bit to smoothen them out so that they are not as clearly visible. Botox treatments can help you achieve a flawless, unlined complexion that will not just roll back the years, but give you back your lost radiance.
  • The procedure administers a miniscule shot of Botox right into the nerves and muscles that lie under the wrinkle. When they relax, so does the overlying skin. As a result, the wrinkle is smoothened out.
  • But the doctor administering the shot must take care to use only the right amount of Botox, and to inject it such that surrounding muscles and nerves are not affected. Wrongly administered Botox can result in a ‘frozen’ face that is devoid of any expression.
  • The injection may sting a little as the chemical enters the body, but the discomfort lasts for only a few minutes. You will not feel any pain later, though the shot will take at least a couple of days to show any results.
  • There is no downtime for the procedure. You can take the shots, rest a while at the clinic, then head out to your normal life.

What to do after the injections

Once you take the Botox treatment, the doctor will recommend a few things that you must be careful about:

  • Do not rub or massage the treated areas at all. Doing so may shift the Botox to other areas.
  • The doctor will ask you to do some gentle face yoga to exercise the treated muscle about an hour after the procedure. You can continue this practice for a few days, by frowning or smiling.
  • Do not lie down for at least four hours after the procedure to allow the Botox to settle.
  • Apply an ice pack to the treated areas to help the Botox settle. Avoid applying makeup or excessively rubbing the skin while cleansing or showering.

Botox shots are not a permanent solution to aging. The effects wear off in about six months, after which a new set of shots are necessary. They are a safe and viable solution to the problem of loose skin that causes fine lines and wrinkles.
